Interview with an Author Featuring Harper A. Brooks

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Harper A. Brooks! Her newest release, Death Deals will be released on March 27th 2020.

Tell me a bit about yourself

I’m really boring, I swear. I say weird sayings all the time, and for someone who’s only thirty, I’m really an old lady. I think I’m hilarious, which means I’m not.

Congrats on your upcoming release! Tell me a bit about this series?

Thanks! It’s an urban fantasy set in present day Virginia. The entire series will be ten books total—that’s seven in the main story line, including a prequel, two side character stories, and one anthology. Yeah, it’s going to be a monster! The story itself follows a newly deceased reaper named Jade Blackwell as she struggles to take to her role in the afterlife. She isn’t very good at her job and gets herself in trouble a lot. But things get messy fast, and she soon discovers she’s meant for much bigger things.

How many books have you written? Which is your fave?

So far, I’ve written eight in my career, but five in the Reaper Reborn series specifically. The three others are paranormal romances. Out of them all, I’d have to say it’s between Christmas Spirits (Reaper Reborn Holiday Novella) or this current new release, Death Deals (Reaper Reborn Book Four)… I enjoyed writing the shorter novella more than I thought I would, and then Death Deals is saucier than my normal stuff in the series, so I enjoyed that for another reason. 😉

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Oh geez… I mean, I always was creating stories. While kids were playing house, I was making magical worlds with witches and vampires and all these fantastical. But as in actual writing, I’d say middle school age. I started with poetry and shorter stories. I gave my friends characters. I even won a Young Author Award in eighth grade and was voted “Most Likely To Be An Author” by all the teachers. I’ll never forget it.

What was your hardest scene to write?

Fight scenes and sex scenes. Hands down. I love reading them AFTER I write them but during it is absolute torture. Too many moving parts. Too many physical and emotional things to juggle. It’s exasperating.

Have you done any book events/cons?

Yes! I’m trying to amp up my event list more, but so far, I have All About the Indies booked for July and my own event that I’m co-hosting in August 2021 called Book Binge.

What is one of your guilty pleasure reads?

It used to be Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter Series, but I’ve strayed from them a lot. So, my not-so-guilty pleasure right now is Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Underworld Series. I’m not hiding my love for it so there’s no guilt here! HA!

If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Maybe Australia? I want to get there eventually. Or maybe New Zealand. I know it’s beautiful there.

What are you currently working on?

I’m SUPPOSED to be working on another side story for my Reaper Reborn Series that releases in June, but I’m in the middle of a tug-o-war between that and book five. I write a little here and there of both. Then I also have a new project I’ve been plotting out, so… you can say I like to torture myself.

What is advice would you give to other authors?

Make other writer friends. And coming from me (a person who doesn’t have many friends in general) that means a lot. Having other good writer friends can help you in many different ways. Writing is a lonely job. It’s easy to self-isolate. Knowing another writer can help you come out of that when you need to, overcome writer’s block, and stay excited about your stuff. You need a hype man/woman sometimes. It truly helps. We all need to support each other.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

My head can be quite a chaotic and scary place, but out of that craziness, I can create some really beautiful and magical stories. That’s what keeps me writing. I’m always thinking about the next story, the next character, the next thing, so if you’re looking for a story that can remove you from your hectic life and transport you to somewhere else entirely, that’s where my books can help.

Thank you Harper A. Brooks for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out and pre-order her upcoming release, Death Deals today!

~Synopsis~

Trust a demon from Hell and you’re guaranteed to get burned.

After failing to gain all her powers, Jade Blackwell is now on a mission to find a new way to Ascend before the apocalypse begins. When she discovers the reason she’s been grounded is because of the Greed demon, Monnie, and a deal she made with him unknowingly, she must do all she can to free herself from their contract. And do it before the demon finds her and drags her to Hell for all of eternity.

Since Jade has no plans to lose her soul anytime soon, she must avoid Monnie’s Halflings at all costs. But when her escape brings her in the line of fire of three warring vampire clans, she is faced with a new and very real danger. One that involves a particular old acquaintance and club owner named Andre DeMonte and is about to spill over into all of Fairport.

With time ticking down, tensions run high as the darkness descends. It will take everything for Jade to climb her way out of the chaos and rise to her full potential.

The entire fate of the world depends on it.

Harper A. Brooks lives in a small town on the New Jersey shore. Even though classic authors have always filled her bookshelves, she finds her writing muse drawn to the dark, magical, and romantic. But when she isn’t creating entire worlds with sexy shifters or legendary love stories, you can find her either with a good cup of coffee in hand or at home snuggling with her furry, four-legged son, Sammy.

She writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
