Interview with an Author featuring Joanna Reeder

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Joanna Reeder! Author of Imitating a Fae Queen (Raven Court Book 1) and the Kindle Vella series, Courting Fae Thieves and Crowns.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Born and raised in Utah. I live with my husband, three littles and a cat named after one of my characters. I love leisure bike rides, kayaking, playing my guitar and Dr. Pepper.

What inspired you to start writing?

When I was in the 4th grade, my teacher encouraged me to enter a story in the Reflections Contest. So I wrote and submitted and won first place in my school. I’ve loved to write ever since!

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I know I’m not alone in it, but I’ve trained myself to write in short 15-20 minute bursts. I’ve had to with little kids. I know some authors need huge blocks of time to write. My best writing time is also in the afternoon. Not the early morning or late at night. I haven’t found many writers with that schedule.

How do you deal with emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

I step away. I go on a walk or for a bike ride. I give myself space from it so that when I come back to it, I can look at it through an objective eye as I edit.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

The constant back and forth between being proud and surprised at the books I wrote, but also the imposter syndrome that can hit at any time and feeling that I’m not good enough or that I’m “pretending” to be an author.

What comes first for you — the plot or the characters — and why?

The characters. Once I’ve gotten to know my characters and their quirks and backstories, the plot comes together from it. A lot of times, the characters determine the plot.

Let’s talk about Kindle Vella. Tell me about your experience with it.

I have loved kindle vella. I think the thing I love the most is that my readers get to experience the story in almost real-time as I do. Sometimes I write a bit ahead, but I’m rarely more than an episode or two ahead of what is currently live. With books, I experience the story all by myself for weeks and weeks, then after tons of edits, etc, etc, and the final book launch, by the time my readers get to experience my book, it’s already “in the past” for me.

My story Courting Fae Thieves and Crowns on Kindle Vella has also been my favorite story I’ve written so far. Of course all of my stories are my babies, but this one has a lot of my heart in it!

Describe yourself in three words.

Loyal, Spiritual, Kind

Do you have any new series planned?

I’m still finishing up my Raven Court series (3 books and a novella are out and I’m working on #4) After that, I’m not sure. Part of me is watching and waiting to see how Kindle Vella goes. I have several stories running through my head that could work well with Kindle Vella.

What advice would you give to other authors?

No writing is wasted. Even that scene you cut because it doesn’t work, or those first few drafts of anything. Every word counts because it helps you learn to be a better writer. And as with anything, practice makes you better.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

I love storytelling and I want my stories to be accessible to anyone. So all of my books are 100% recommendable. I don’t write steamy, or gore, or foul language, so you can recommend my books to your daughters, co-workers and grandmas.

Thank you Joanna Reeder for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out her books today!

~Synopsis~

They say I look just like her.

They say I could save the realm if I pretend to be her.

But I’m just a human girl and refuse to leave my life to save their precious Raven Court.

My boyfriend, Sterling, might be a fae, but I want nothing to do with Faerie. Luckily, he promised never to take me. But when his painfully gorgeous brother, Tien, shows up and says I look identical to their missing High Queen, I’m asked to go with him to prevent Faerie from sinking into chaos.

When I refuse, I’m kidnapped.

As I’m forced through the portal to Faerie by the brooding Tien, he promises my captivity is only temporary. If I can convince the Raven Court their beloved queen is alive and well, he’ll take me back home. But while I’m pretending to be her, dark secrets surface. I try not to care, but realize I might have the power to change an injustice that suddenly means so much to me… even as a fake queen.

Faerie is magical and cruel, full of wonder and madness. But it isn’t my home. And yet, it feels so familiar…

Torn between two different worlds, I’m forced to consider: where do I truly belong?

Imitating a Fae Queen is perfect for fans of The Iron King and The Vampire Diaries. If you love brooding fae captains, terrifying water horses, and best-friend romance, you’ll love this page-turning fae fantasy.

Imitating a Fae Queen is Book One in the Raven Court Series by USA Today bestselling author, Joanna Reeder.

Joanna Reeder is a USA Today Bestselling author who takes readers time traveling through dreams, shifting into fantastical creatures, and tossed into Faerie. Her fantasy stories always have a dash of romance, leave readers turning pages long into the night, and eager to recommend them to their daughters and grandmas and coworkers!

When Joanna isn’t writing, she enjoys bike rides and kayaking with her hubby and kids, vacations at the beach (with a book to read, of course!) and learning new songs on her blue electric guitar.

She’s a believer in the paranormal (seriously, she has stories) and her motto is, “A Dr. Pepper a day keeps insanity away!”

Remember Me: A Novel by Estelle – My Review

Title: Remember Me: A Novel

Author: Estelle Laure

Release Date: March 22nd 2022

Genre: Young Adult, Coming of Age

Remember Me is an astonishingly bold young adult novel from Estelle Laure, the critically acclaimed author of This Raging Light and Mayhem

If you could erase all of your painful memories, would you?

Blue Owens wakes up one day with the strangest feeling that something is very wrong. Everyone’s acting weird and she’s found a note in her closet telling her to get on the Little Blue Bus at 7:45, which she does, meeting up with the exact person she was supposed to avoid: Adam Mendoza. Even though she has no idea who he is, something about him is so familiar.

When she confronts him, the truth is revealed—Blue has paid to have her memories removed, and Adam is one of those memories. As Blue struggles to piece together her history, she is torn between her desire to know why she would do something so drastic and her fear of what she will find.

Remember Me is the bold and beautiful story of a girl who must find the courage to face the demons of her past and reclaim her loved ones—even if it ruins her.

This was a different and interesting read. It’s starts off with Blue heading to school. Yet something feels off. She finds a note and has no clue who could have written it. From there the story progresses as Blue sets out to find out what happened to her. My heart did hurt for her. There’s a lot of heavy moments. If only it were that simple to simply forget. While there’s a lot of deep scenes, there’s some lighter ones which gives you a sense of hope. Like the sun coming out after a cloudy day.

After finishing, I took some time to sort out my feelings. On one hand, I enjoyed it. There’s a really good twist and of course that ending. On the other hand, I had mixed feelings on how certain things played out for Blue. I won’t spoil anything. All I have to say is read it for yourself. I give this 3 stars.

Ember of Night by Molly E. Lee – My Review

Title: Ember of Night

Author: Molly E. Lee

Release Date: May 4th 2021

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal

“What to read after A Court of Thorns and Roses! Full of twists you’ll never see coming!” –UppercaseYA

I’ve never been a stranger to the darkness. But when darkness comes knocking and looks thatgood, who wouldn’t invite him in?

Draven is mysterious, evasive, and hot as sin. The only thing more infuriating than how much he won’t say is how obnoxious he is every time he does open his mouth. But when a group of strangers attacks me and he fights back, causing them to vanish into a cloud of black dust, I know Draven is more than he seems.

He finally shows me there’s a veil separating the world I know from a world of demons living all around us. Turns out, good and evil are just words. Some of the demons don’t fall into either category. And I’m realizing just how easily I fit in among the ancient warlocks, the divine soldiers, and the twisted supernaturals…

There’s so much more to me. To my past. And to what I am truly capable of than I ever thought possible. So when all signs point to me having the ability to unleash Hell on earth? I’ll have to decide if I want to do the world a solid and save it, or give it one hell of a makeover.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate this cover! Love the colors and the vibe. Totally eye catching!

Right from the start, I was pulled into the story. It was dark and dangerous, which called to my black heart. Harley has been through a lot. My heart went out to her right away. Weird things are happening but it’s all in her head right? Enter Draven. Who gives so little but surprises her at almost every turn. As you’re reading, you can feeling the danger simmering just below the surface and you know things are gonna start to happen! The author does a fantastic job of building suspense and keeping the reader engaged. I loved the push and pull between Harley and Draven. The heat factor is definitely there! That ending! I need book two like NOW!

As a whole, this book is darkly entrancing. It has suspense, action, secrets, and a really hot guy who is book boyfriend material. This is a new to me author and I quite enjoyed her writing and storytelling style. I look forward to reading more from this author. If you love paranormal with a dark vibe, I highly recommend this book! I give this 4 stars.

Author Spotlight · Interview with an Author · New Release

Interview with an Author featuring Alice Ivinya

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Alice Ivinya! Her newest release, Feathers of Blood (Kingdom of Birds and Beasts Book 2) released on October 6th 2021.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hello! I live in Bristol, UK with my husband, toddler and the best dog in the world, Summer.

I work as a small animal vet three days a week for a charity treating the pets of those who would otherwise be unable to afford medical care for their pets. The rest of the time I look after my toddler, or write books when he’s asleep! I also love reading and walking my dog.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I have written stories for as long as I can remember. The first books were about a group of kids who ran away and became rulers of all the sharks in the sea. Worryingly they all got married at the age of 12-14 but that was old to my 8 year old self! I wrote my first full length novel at 11. It was about a magician’s apprentice who was bad at magic. Throughout my teenage years I wrote epic fantasy after epic fantasy that my poor parents had to read, even when they went over 200,000 words! As a child I was badly dyslexic and struggled with sentence structure and spelling to the extent that many of my early stories were illegible until I typed them up. It took me much longer than all the other children in my class to both write and type, but I just loved to tell stories and have never been able to stop telling them. Slowly I developed techniques to get around my dyslexia and now it never holds me back. I now have eleven published full length books and seven short stories.

What time of the day do you usually write?

Until six months ago, I would write in my son’s midday nap, but just after he hit two, he stopped sleeping in the day unless it was a quick nap in the car! Now I write in the evenings. This was easier in lock down, as now the world is opening up again, I feel there is a lot competing for my time! I now have Wednesday morning child-free where I try and get a good 2-4k words down!

How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing?

It depends on the book. Normally I know what I want the world to ‘feel’ like and everything stems from there, rather than knowing the ins and outs. Often as the characters discover the world for themselves, I’m also discovering it!

Which of your books were the most enjoyable to write?

Hands down Feathers of Snow and Feathers of Blood. SO MUCH FUN! I’m so excited to write the last book in the trilogy!

I also have a book coming called The Widow and the Beast, which is like my pick me up project when I need a break from my bigger books. It is set in the land of faery and is so much fun, it always gets me back into the mood.

What book is currently by your bedside table?

The Fair Queen by Lyndsey Hall, which is excellent.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

I do, and I have made some amazing friends! I am especially honoured and excited when they make fan art! Mostly they want me to write faster haha!

Favorite book when you were a kid.

Spellfall by Katherine Roberts until about the age of 12 when I became obsessed with Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time and then Brandon Sanderson.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Hufflepuff, Divergent, Family.

What advice would you give to other authors?

Keep writing! Every book published is a game changer!

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

I really hope my books strengthen people to overcome whatever challenges they face. Plus animals. There will always be animals!

Thank you Alice Ivinya for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out her series, Kingdom of Birds and Beasts today!

Alice lives in Bristol, UK, and has loved fantasy all her life. Her favourite author is Brandon Sanderson. When she’s not off gallivanting in other worlds, you can find her looking after her young son, working as a small animal vet, hanging out with her church family, or walking the best dog in the world with her husband.

Interview with an Author Featuring A.D. Trosper

The Literary Vixen presents…

205178511_1229983617439031_852790247531918793_n

Joining us today is A.D. Trosper! Her latest release. Chosen: A Mature Young Adult Paranormal Fantasy Romance (Raven Daughter Book 3) release on April 27th 2021

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always written stuff, but I don’t think I ever really saw myself as a writer until I actually published my first book. And even then, I don’t think I really felt that way for a long time. Maybe not until my second or third book. It’s complicated. I mean, I was a person who wrote stuff, but was I actually a writer, could really call myself that. Wasn’t that reserved for names like Robert Jordan, Steven King, Nora Roberts, and the like. Now I’m generally okay with thinking of myself as a writer, but I still come down with Imposter Syndrome on occasion.

What time of the day do you usually write?

At night. I’m a total night owl. I don’t mind mornings, as long as I’ve been awake all night when it gets here. But I am so not waking up to see it unless there is no way around it. And then I will grump about it.

How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing?

I’m a total pantser, so there is no before I start writing. The story rolls around in my head until some sort of a somewhat cohesive ball forms and then I take that and throw it at the wall. Some of it sticks, most of it morphs into something different, and I’m constantly surprised by what happens and what my characters encounter.

Which of your books were the most enjoyable to write?

I don’t know, all of them in their time. But if I had to choose, it would be a toss up between Bound by Legend and Betrayed. Both are second books, so the world was mostly set by then, and both came pretty easy to the page. Tears was also a second book but it broke my heart to write that one, I literally cried while typing at one point.

Who is the author you most admire in your genre?

I have two that run head to head, Sarah J Maas and Karen Lynch. I think they are phenomenal writers and I love all of their books.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

I do. Mostly they ask for the next the book and they often tell me they enjoyed one of my books or series’, which is always nice to hear.

Favorite book when you were a kid?

The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West by Mary Stanton, and also the Drizzt Du’Urden trilogy by R.A. Salvatore, Monster by Christopher Pike, and Remember Me by Christopher Pike. I can’t narrow it down any further.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Weird, goofy, loyal.

What advice would you give to other authors?

Write. In the end, no matter what happens with sales, advertising, etc, the words we put down on the page are the only thing we have control over. Too often we get caught up in all of that forget the love of words that drove us to create stories in the first place. So write, and never forget the passion for creation that started you on this path.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

I never know what to say to this kind of question. This is where my introverted self feels like she is suddenly in a spotlight and my ability to answer gets all messed up. About me and my books? I have a real soft spot for soulmates and all of my books feature them in someway or another, even my epic fantasy has them. Let’s see, what else… Um, I like words and my books have them. Lots of them. Which is good because that tends to be the main ingredient in books.

Thank you A.D. Trosper for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out her Raven Daughter series today!

51emWsV7SRL

~Synopsis~

***Raven Daughter is a completed series of three books.

I’m Jo and the death of my mother revealed a whole lot of secrets she was keeping. Like the fact that my sperm-donor father was a freaking angel who couldn’t keep it in his pants and slept with a woman he should never have been with. Or the fact I’m not mortal and would one day be a reaper of souls.

Reaping souls, now there is something I never dreamed I would do, but here I am doing just that. Or at least I was, until souls started becoming Lost. And that’s when things went south.

When I stupidly agreed to help discover what was causing the Lost without reading the fine print first. Now a lot of immortals would like to see me dead because of what I might become. To top it off, I ended up blood bound to a powerful half-demon who is supposed to be a reaper’s sworn enemy. Funny thing is he may be the only one I can trust.

Warning: Although this series deals with angels and demons, there is nothing religious about them. Anyone looking for that within the pages of these books will be disappointed.

**This book is part of a series and ends on a cliffhanger.

Writer, mother, ruler of the world inside my head…mostly. I currently work and live on the plains of central Kansas with its gorgeous skies and fantastic storms. I have two sweet dogs and I’m owned by a cat who thinks she is a goddess that should be worshipped. When not reading or writing, I game and garden, I also take care of my large flock of incredibly spoiled chickens who in return, give me rather expensive free eggs.

Interview with an Author Featuring Sherry D. Ficklin

The Literary Vixen presents…

sherry author

Joining us today is Sherry D. Ficklin! Her newest release, Kingdom of Shadows and Dust released on June 1st 2021.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always wanted to be a reader. I think it’s an important distinction. I became a writer because I wanted to control the story I was reading. Writing was the natural progression of that.

What time of the day do you usually write?

I try to keep somewhat normal office hours, M-F 9 am to 4pm. But often life has other plans. I try to write at least a little every day.

How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing?

It depends on the story and the genre. I have worksheets that help me flesh out my world, they are especially useful for fantasy/paranormal. Historical is easier.

Which of your books were the most enjoyable to write?

Losing Logan was the most fun I’ve ever had writing. Partly because the story and characters are so personal to me, partly because Zoe is so funny. I laughed out loud a LOT.

What book is currently by your bedside table?

The Lost Book of the White by Cassandra Clare. I’m in love with everything she writes.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

It depends. I don’t get a ton of personal emails/letters, feedback is usually in review form. And honestly, it runs the spectrum from “I loved this so much” to “Wow, you really suck.” That’s kind of the deal when you write. Some people will love it, and some will hate it. You have to have a very thick skin.

Favorite book when you were a kid.

My Antonia. It was one of those read-for-school books, and I thought I’d hate it, but it was really transformative.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Rebel.

What advice would you give to other authors?

Just write. Write for yourself. Finish the story. Tell it your way. If you love it, that’s really all that matters.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

My books are an escape. Writing them is my escape and reading them is yours. It’s not about making a point or conveying some bigger truth. It’s entertainment. That’s all I’m trying to bring to the table.

Thank you Sherry D. Ficklin for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out her newest release, Kingdom of Shadows and Dust today!

5-gold-stars

Sherry’s first book in a fantastic young adult fantasy series is astounding! This is not the first book I have read by her and I patiently await the next.

If you like kingdoms, a badass princess, bad boys and a whole bunch of royal intrigue. This is the book for you!!

Enjoy it as I did. 5 stars goes to Sherry!

I. CAN. NOT. WAIT. FOR. MORE.
