Interview with an Author featuring Tony Reyes

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Tony Reyes! Author of the Waiting for Darkness series.

How long have you been writing?

I was into writing stories as a kid, junior high and high school, but it was just something I did in my room when an idea popped into my head. They were horrible stories, but it was a beginning.  I started writing more seriously in my 20s, mainly short films and screenplays. I wrote and shot several short films, but found myself bound by budget, so I decided to concentrate on one of my screenplays and turn it into a novel. That is what finally became Waiting for Darkness.

Describe a typical writing day.

I haven’t been writing lately (neck deep in research) but when I do, I usually start writing when everyone in the house has gone to sleep, I kill all the lights, turn off the TV, airplane mode and the only music I will listen to is classical, no lyrics allowed. I found I will sing along if I play pop music, so I found I basically listen to what the soundtrack would be if the story was a movie. With my particular style of writing, the music of choice is usually Holsts The Planets,  or maybe Barber: Adagio for Strings.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

The classics. I just always wanted to be able to paint pictures with words the way my favorite writers did. Twain, Poe, Lovecraft, Orwell, etc…

What are some challenges that have come up during your writing and publishing journey?

The amount of rejections you get, both with screenplays and novels can be devastating.  You have to just keep plugging away, that is what they say. You can’t take it personal, but after a while it does feel that way. Since I was never able to find an open door to walk through, I decided to just self publish so at least I would have a copy on my bookshelf.

When you’re writing an emotionally draining (or sexy, or sad, etc) scene, how do you get in the mood?

By the time I get to writing I have probably talked the scene out in my head over and over again. I work it out like a movie scene. Have to be alone for this or people will look at your strangely J So by the time I get to writing I just go back to that place I was when I was feeling the scene and I run with it.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Stubborn, creative, and MacGyverish (I can pretty much fix anything)

What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

My biggest hope is that when the close the book, just for a second, they thing “Could Darklings really exist?”

Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with me?

I am researching book 3, which will end this cycle of the story. But I have plans in the world, one offs, spin offs, prequels, etc.

What advice would you give to other aspiring authors?

Make time to write, the best thing for me is NaNoWriMo, where you committed to writing at least 1000 words a day. That is really a great discipline to have. I wish I could say I was able to continue that pace. Life seems to get in the way.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

That I am a fan of story, especially with a dark twist to it. I love the craft of piecing together scenes that take the reader on a journey. I love the idea that I write the story and every time someone reads it, they have a different movie in their mind’s eye that someone else may have had. No matter when someone cracks the book open they travel in time to the point I was writing the story, probably in the middle of the night in my underwear, it is like I am the screenwriter and the reader is the director with carte blanche. No two readers ever have the same vision, they all have their own spin on it. From characters to locale, I can give them the bones and they flesh the visual out. I love that idea.

Thank you Tony Reyes for chatting with me! I will include his information down below. Check out his Waiting for Darkness series today!

Will Cruz stop Lilith’s reign of Darkness?

With over 30 years of television/film experience, Tony Reyes has had the opportunity of working almost every job the industry offers. All of these positions have pointed in one direction, Storytelling. Several completed screenplays later, he decided to turn one into a novel. “Waiting for Darkness” became that first novel.

When Tony isn’t writing scripts or working on a novel, free time is spent dedicated to his kids, reading anything in sight and, playing and building guitars.

Waiting for Darkness Book 1 by Tony Reyes – My Review

Title: Waiting for Darkness Book 1

Author: Tony Reyes

Release Date: July 30th 2013

Genre: Vampire Thriller, Horror

Cruz Espinoza, a brilliant young surgeon, has his life ripped from him as he is pulled into the supernatural world of the Darkling. Cruz looks for answers to millennia old questions. Where did the Vampire myth come from? Who gave them these powers? And why? He finds the answers, answers that shake his faith.

Vampires? Horror? Yes, please!

Cruz’s life was changed forever in one night.

The story as a whole was interesting and entertaining at times. The beginning was a little shaky for me and sometimes I couldn’t separate past events or scenes from what was happening in the present. All that aside, I did enjoy the story. I enjoyed how different it was from other vampire stories I’ve read. The ending was a total surprise!

If you like horror and vampires, check out Waiting for Darkness! I give this 4 stars.

Release Date: November 9th 2021

Genre: Shifter Thrillers

Lawyer. Demon. Lily Knight is both—half-human, half-succubus, and utterly dangerous.

But after a fellow succubus turns up murdered and the police arrest an innocent man, Lily discovers evidence of a supernatural killer stalking the foggy San Francisco streets. And when human justice falls short, she launches an unsanctioned investigation to find the real culprit.

To stop the killer, she must embrace the full power of her heritage and risk the soul of the handsome suspect she can’t help but fall for. Can Lily face her true nature without losing her humanity—or will she become the monster she fears most of all?

If you love Richelle Mead, Lisa Edmonds, or Seanan McGuire, discover a paranormal mystery series complete with a fierce heroine that will have you begging for the next book!

This is my first book by Erin Fulmer and it won’t be my last. Her storytelling style drew me in and I was here for the ride that is Cambion’s Law. I have never read a demon book quite like this one. The author definitely added her own twist and I was here for it. These characters were great! I have my faves!

This was such an entertaining read. I had trouble putting it down. I needed to know what was going to happen next! Erin Fulmer is a new to me author and I look forward to reading more from her! I highly recommend this one! I give this 5 stars.

Interview with an Author Featuring Carrigan Richards

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Carrigan Richards! Her newest release, January Dreams (January Dreams Series Book 1) released on January 25th 2021.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing when I was 10.

Describe a typical writing day.

Wake up late…lounge around…finally get to my computer or notebook and start writing. Write until the wee hours of the morning.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

Life – everything and everywhere. Books, movies, music…

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so, who? And what makes them so special.

I love all my characters honestly – even the bad guys. I love how strong they are, yet how much they grow through all they’ve experienced. They all make mistakes which is human, and I love how real they are.

How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

When writing Pieces of Me and another contemporary, both made me cry. They deal with such deep and dark issues, but they are issues that people deal with on a daily basis. After writing both books, I have to step away and focus on something much lighter. Sometimes I listen to music or watch TV or watch a bunch of puppy videos.

What book is currently on your bedside table?

Nicholas Sparks’ The Return

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I keep reading what’s out there. What’s new…what’s exciting. Sometimes I’ll go into my vault of old ideas that could still be used. Each book is different in the series, as they face new problems, but the overall problem is still there.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Loyal, determined, kind.

What advice would you give to other authors?

Never give up! If writing is something you love, keep writing no matter what. It isn’t easy, but nothing worth having is easy.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

That my books are meant to be fun, yet somewhat educational. I want them to know that while life is hard and frustrating, there are good things in life.

Thank you Carrigan Richards for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out her newest release, January Dreams today!

~Synopsis~

Love is the last thing on seventeen-year-old Megan Devereux’s mind. The only thing she wants to focus on is continuing her good grades to get a scholarship so she can leave her stressful home.

She starts having dreams of sharing an intensely, visceral love with Casper Truitt. But in real life, she hates Casper. She wants nothing to do with him, but that doesn’t stop him from suddenly paying attention to her, claiming he likes her.

When Megan meets the brooding and handsome Vincent, they start dating and quickly fall in love. But each time they kiss, she sees vivid visions of another time and place.

Consumed by the dreams and visions, Megan’s determined to learn the truth about them, but the more she learns, the more her life is in danger.

Carrigan is the author of Pieces of Me, a young adult contemporary romance, and the Elemental Enchanters Series, a young adult paranormal romance. She was born in Cullman, Alabama, but grew up in Birmingham, and moved to Atlanta at 18. She earned her BA in English at Kennesaw State University. For as long as she can remember, she was always making up stories and characters inside her head, sometimes using her dolls to act out the scenes.

When she’s not writing (which is rare), she’s spending time with her family and friends, listening to music, playing with her two furbabies, or cheering on her Atlanta Braves.

Author Spotlight · Interview with an Author

Interview with an Author Featuring Yolanda Olson

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Yolanda Olson! Her book, Malediction Codex releases on July 7th 2020.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

Probably when I was younger. (About 8ish) I had a habit of writing two paragraph horror stories and reading them to the kids in the neighborhood.

What about the horror genre interests you?

The freedom to write what I want. Horror has so many subgenres and you can get away with almost anything! Honestly, I just like being different. I’m not a big fan of standard romance or HEAs/HFNs, so I go the violent route and have fun with it.

What was the first horror/story you remember reading?

R.L. Stine was one of my favorite authors as a child. So his Fear Street & Goosebumps books were something I always enjoyed to read.

Do you ever come up with anything so wild that you scare yourself, that leaves you wondering where that came from?

BONES gave me insomnia. I could not get a decent night’s sleep until that book was over and done with.

Do you have a favorite character that you have written? If so who? And what makes them so special.

Lakyn Meyer probably. He’s a sociopathic asshole that loves himself and nothing else. But he’s funny as hell too. And he loves Blondie lol

Do you ever research real events, legends, or myths to get ideas?

Nope. I go with whatever sits in my brain at the time. I’m sure every piece of fiction is influenced in one way or another by true events or a historical one, but I like to just go with the flow.

Do you look to your own phobias to find subject matter? Are your stories the products of nightmares, childhood experiences, fantasies?

No, I can’t say I’ve written one based on my phobias, fears, or a nightmare yet. I don’t think I’d have as much fun with that as I do when I just wing it lol.

What is one stereotype about horror authors is absolutely wrong? What one stereotype is dead on?

That only men can be horror authors. (It grinds my gears, but whatever.) On point? I don’t know. I try not to pay attention to stereotypes.

Do you have any fun Halloween experiences you can share with us?

None that I can remember. I love the holiday, but I don’t go all out for it.

What advice would you give to other authors?

Just write it. Seriously, for every one person that hates what you wrote, I promise you that there will be five more that love it.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

I am not what I write. My imagination is wild and it’s fun to play there but don’t approach me at an event scared. I’m actually really quiet, shy and awkward in person.

Thank you Yolanda Olson for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out her newest release, Malediction Codex today!

~Synopsis~

The Priestess

Devil boys think they’re so smart.

Of course, when it comes to Lakyn Meyer, they think they’re so damn beautiful too.

I guess he has a point, but this was never about him. It was about me and he waltzed in and stole the show as he’s accustomed to.

Maybe one day I’ll get rid of him once and for all.

Even if it’s not anytime soon.

The Devil

Holy babble balls, man.

Beatrix St. Germain thinks she’s some kind of superhero to her emo dark lord down below but all I hear is her flapping her gums like she’s the greatest thing on Earth.

We all know that’s a lie—especially since I’m here.

Trixie has tried to get rid of me but when I make a pact with someone, I stick to it.

Soul mates without benefits suits me just fine.

For now.

The Burden

One day I’ll be able to stand on my own two feet.

I hate when Bea and Lakyn are together, but I hate it even more when the three of us are apart.

He promises me spare time with Bea and in return, I do whatever he tells me to.

I’m Ichabod Foster.

Maybe you’ve forgotten about me at this point too, and that’s okay.

Just try not to forget about me entirely because I’ll never forget about you.

This set includes the entire Malediction Saga: Scavengers, Vultures, and Carrion. Also included is Detritus which was only available for a very limited time and Sunder which has never been released.

The Essence of Darkness by Thomas Clearlake – My Review

Title: The Essence of Darkness

Author: Thomas Clearlake

Release Date: April 18th 2020

Genre: Horror, Suspense

Five unexplained child disappearances have plagued the small town of St. Marys in the space of four months. All the elements indicate that these are abductions. FBI Special Agent Eliott Cooper is sent to investigate.
Little by little, he uncovers facts that he can’t rationally explain. Soon, he finds that a dark and very ancient evil seems to have taken over the forests around the city.
This is only the beginning of his investigation…

I really wanted to like this book. The synopsis was good and had piqued my interest. The story has potential. It just didn’t deliver. The story lagged in a lot of places. The main character wasn’t very likable. I had trouble connecting with him. There were some contradicting scenes and or parts in the story. There are some good scenes. Just not enough to keep my interest. I had to DNF (did not finish) at 22%. This book wasn’t for me but it may be for someone else. If it catches your interest, check it out for yourself. I give this 2 stars.

It left me wanting more.

One catastrophic day, my wish is granted.
