The New Husband by D.J. Palmer – My Review

Title: The New Husband

Author: D.J. Palmer

Release Date: April 14th 2020

Genre: Psychological Thriller

The New Husband is a riveting thriller about the lies we tell ourselves from D. J. Palmer, the author of Saving Meghan.

Just because you love someone doesn’t mean you know them.

Nina Garrity learned that the hard way after discovering that her missing husband, Glen, had been leading a double life with another woman. But Glen’s gone—presumably drowned while fishing on his boat—so she can’t confront him about the affair or any of his other misdeeds. A year and a half after the accident, Nina considers herself a widow, even though the police never found a body. Following a chance encounter with Simon Fitch, a teacher from her daughter Maggie’s middle school, Nina finds love again and has hopes of putting her shattered life back together.

Simon, a widower still grieving the suicide of his first wife, has found his dream girl in Nina. His charm and affections help break through to a heart hardened by betrayal. Nina’s teenage son, Connor, embraces Simon as the father he wishes his dad could have been, but Maggie sees a far darker side to this new man in their lives. Even Nina’s good friends wonder if Simon is supremely devoted—or dangerously possessive.

But Nina is committed, not only to her soon-to-be new husband but also to resuming her former career as a social worker. Before she can move forward, however, Nina must first clear her conscience that she’s not making another terrible choice in a man. In doing so, she will uncover the shocking truth: the greatest danger to her, and her children, are the lies people tell themselves.

The New Husband is a psychological thriller.
The story was a bit slow going in the beginning. Not enough to make me lose interest. I realize it’s building up to what’s to come. I’m impatient! To me, most of the characters were not very likable. I had trouble relating to Nina or even Maggie. Simon was a piece of work and I give props to the author on that. Hey, I can appreciate a well written character. He did his job. All that being said, I did enjoy this book. The story was a thriller with a touch of dark. Once it hit a certain point, I pretty much read straight through until the end. I needed to know how this was all going to end! I can’t wait to read more from this author! I give this 4 stars.

The synopsis is what hooked me. You know I love me a good thriller!

I appreciated the authors note in the beginning in regards to proper pronunciation of common Irish names. The book is a bit slow to start. Everything is being set up and you’re getting background information. I started having my suspicions as things slowly started to come together. I also wasn’t exactly sold on the characters at first but as the story progressed, I came around. None of them are very likable but yet it worked for the story. Then the story takes off and holy hell you’re in for a ride! There are some twists and turns I didn’t see coming. I was guessing till the very end. Then sat there and was like whoa. Yeah, so good.

This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I plan on checking out other works by her. I truly enjoyed this book. If you’re a fan of thriller, I highly recommend checking this book out. I give this 4 stars.

In his online confession, Reed claims that his relationship with Trozzo began with a tweet, an unexpected endorsement from the pop star herself. Almost overnight, Reed’s novel garners national attention, and the reclusive writer is thrust into the spotlight. But according to Reed, the endorsement came with a price.

In the days that follow, Reed is invited to Trozzo’s Los Angeles mansion, where he is solicited to write her memoir. Lured by her physical appeal and charisma, Reed delves further and further into Trozzo’s fantasy world, ensnared by a twisted story of betrayal and vengeance.

On the night of Trozzo’s death, Reed finally discovers his true role in this story, as well as the pop star’s alternative ending to his famous novel—one that leads to his arrest.

Set in Hollywood, She Died Famous is an innovative thriller that exposes the dark side of fame and obsession in today’s digital landscape. The story’s shocking twists and unreliable narrator will have every reader asking: Who killed Kelly Trozzo?

~My Review~

She Died Famous is a gritty suspense dark read. Kaleb’s world is turned upside down when famous superstar Kelly Trozzo raves about his book. He’s pulled back into a world of dark indulgence and there is no way out.

The cover is what caught my eye. Yes I look at covers! Then read the synopsis and it sounded like my kind of read. I wasn’t disappointed. It is dark. It is suspense filled. Broken people battling their demons. At times it seemed like the story was a bit disjointed but it came together eventually. Some of the characters were hard to like and that’s how it was supposed to be. Great job Mr. Rutkin! The story is not a fairy tale and the author wasn’t afraid to dive down the dark drug demon hole. This story isn’t for everyone but I enjoyed it. I give it 4 stars.

~My Review~

Everyone has secrets and some aren’t who they appear to be. Single, is a suspense filled read that will have you guessing till the last page.

This book is a pretty good read. It has some twists. The characters were hardly likable. Kind of refreshing. I know, weird right? That is part of why the story worked for me. Some of the things that happen cannot be pulled off by likable characters. This is my first K.L. Slater book and it won’t be the last! I loved the author’s style of writing. I can’t wait to check out more! I give this 4 stars.
