Unspeakable Things by Jess Lourey – My Review

Title: Unspeakable Things

Author: Jess Lourey

Release Date: January 1st 2020

Genre: Mysteries

~Synopsis~

Inspired by a terrifying true story from the author’s hometown, a heart-pounding novel of suspense about a small Minnesota community where nothing is as quiet—or as safe—as it seems.

Cassie McDowell’s life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them.

All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale.

One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed—violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who’s responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface. Then Cassie’s own sister undergoes the dark change. If she is to survive, Cassie must find her way in an adult world where every sin is justified, and only the truth is unforgivable.

~My Review~

When a book is a thriller and also has “based on true events’ attached to it, I’m going to want to read it.

The story is told through Cassie, who is a child. Every day she survives school and especially her home life. She knows her father isn’t like other fathers. When something starts to happen to local boys, Cassie wants to solve the case.

Cassie is a smart child. She’s bright and I loved how confident she is at such a young age. I did cringe for her at the way her dad acted towards her and her sister. There’s also a bit of nostalgia because of when the story took place. From the first page, I was totally engaged. The mystery of what was happening to the local boys, kept me from putting this book down. I needed to know what would happen next! So many people under suspicion and just when you think you know, the story takes another turn. The book and the characters are well written. If you’re a fan of thrillers, I highly recommend checking this one out. I give this 5 stars.

A Bad Day for Sunshine: A Novel (Sunshine Vicram Series Book 1) by Darynda Jones – My Review

Release Date: April 7th 2020

Genre: Mysteries

~Synopsis~

New York Times bestselling author Darynda Jones is back with the first novel in the brand-new snarky, sassy, wickedly fun Sunshine Vicram seriesA Bad Day for Sunshine!

Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.

Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee—and a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff—an election her adorably meddlesome parents entered her in—and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of it’s reminding Sunny why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that trouble at her daughter’s new school and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and Sunshine has her hands full.

Enter sexy almost-old-flame Levi Ravinder and a hunky US Marshal, both elevens on a scale of one to blazing inferno, and the normally savvy sheriff is quickly in over her head. Now it’s up to Sunshine to juggle a few good hunky men, a not-so-nice kidnapping miscreant, and Doug the ever-pesky flasher. And they said coming home would be drama-free.

~My Review~

This is the first book I’ve read from this author. I absolutely loved it! A Bad Day for Sunshine is a definitely a page turner. The story has tons of humor but it’s also thrilling and filled with suspense. The story has a little slow start but once it picked up, I didn’t put it down. These characters are all well rounded. I love the author’s writing style and the life she gave to this story and characters. I can’t wait for the next book! I am hooked on this series. I give this 5 stars.
