Interview with an Author featuring Kenzie Graves

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Kenzie Graves! Her debut, She-Wolf and the Beast: A Rejected Mate Retelling (Love is Grimm Book 1) released on October 31st 2021.

What inspired you to start writing?

I always wanted to be a writer ever since I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when I was about 11. I tried many times to write a story, but never seemed to be able to complete it. Then when I was about 21, I had a dream that was extremely vivid and I sat on that idea for four years. I was in a group chat with two indie authors in 2019 and they encouraged me to get that idea on paper. So, I finally did after I had my son in October 2019, and published the story in June 2020!

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I have been told that I tend to write the FMC’s best friend to always be extremely sassy. In every book that I have written, this has happened. That and every animal counterpart I write is very sassy and tends to want the FMC to do things to the MMC.

How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

I actually tend to go through the emotions with my characters. If they are making a joke, I am laughing at it. If they are angry at another character, I am angry along with them. When their heart breaks or suffering from a loss, I am holding back tears as I type out the words. My characters are a part of me, so I experience everything that they go through as I type out the words.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I have written 11 books so far, and I would have to say Little Red Wolf has been my favorite. It was the first book that I wrote spicier scenes than normal, and it broke me out of my shell. The FMC and MMC were so fun to write. They truly loved each other from the moment I created them, and it was so easy to write their story because of it.

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

I would have to say Patricia Briggs and P.C Cast. Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson series was the first series that was Urban Fantasy and a little PNR that made me only enjoy stories that had some form of magic or paranormal creature inside of it. Both authors are incredible with their world building, character arcs, and amazing storytelling that I aspire to have in my own stories.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

Every so often I get a reader who reaches out to me. Not too long ago I had a reader join my group and post in it that Little Red Wolf got her out of a reading slump and it made my life. It truly keeps me wanting to write when I hear from my readers. I love when they post in my group or PM me on messenger!

What book is currently on your bedside table?

Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. I watched the show and I hear the books are monumentally better, as books usually are, and I want to read the details that the show missed.

Do you have any new series planned?

I do! After Love is Grimm, I have a whole new world planned of 5 different kingdoms and in each kingdom the FMC will go through their own journey of rejection and finding mates that truly love her and will support her. Some may have some enemies to lovers thrown in, too.

If your book was to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it?

My current series are standalones, so I’ll go with She-Wolf and the Beast. I’d say Bella Thorn for Isabelle, Dove Cameron for Abby, Dylan Sprouse for Colin, a young Johnny Depp for Garrett and Liam Hemsworth for Aiden.

What advice would you give to other authors?

I would have to say learn your genre, build your readership, and have an understanding of how to market within your genre before you even start writing. I didn’t, and it has been a struggle. I am learning as I go, which is the hard way, and it will make your life easier if you learn those things before you jump into publishing.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

It is my passion to be an author. I’ve wanted to do this since I was eleven years old and becoming a bookworm. I’ve always been someone who loves to help others, and I see this as my way of helping others I don’t even know. If I can provide you an escape from reality when you need it most, then I did what I set out to do. I hope to make someone’s day by reading the worlds and characters I have created just like the authors I read growing up did for me.

Thank you Kenzie Graves for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out She-Wolf and the Beast today!

~Synopsis~

The Shadow’s Heir (The Cursed Queens Book 2) by E.E. Hornburg – My Review

Title: The Shadow’s Heir (The Cursed Queens Book 2)

Author: E.E. Hornburg

Release Date: May 17th 2022

Genre: Fantasy, Retellings

Myra has spent years hiding—in servitude of the now imprisoned Queen Amelia, and from a lineage she never wanted.

Now that she is freed from Amelia’s clutches, Myra is ready for a new start, but the echoes of the past, and the truth of who she is—a direct descendant of Stula, the goddess of death—will only disrupt the peace she wants to find in the kingdom of Oxare.

The kingdom is beautiful, as is the handsome prince Alvis and though his offer to join him at the Golden Palace is tempting, Myra is determined to make her own way.

But when a life on her own becomes too difficult, Myra is forced to accept Alvis’ offer and lands in the thick of a plot to free Queen Amelia. To keep the entire realm and her people safe, Myra and Alvis must find out who among the Golden Palace court is the betrayer before Amelia escapes.

But with each passing day Myra feels her connection to Alvis growing stronger, and her past continues to haunt her. Can they protect the kingdom and each other, before Amelia takes her revenge and Alvis finds out the truth?

Fans of Sarah J Maas, Hannah Whitten, and Emma Hamm will love this magical Cinderella retelling and follow up to The Night’s Chosen!

Fantastic world building! Mystery and deception. People are more than what they seem.

I could not put this book down! I was totally captivated right from the start. I knew that Myra and Alvis’ story was going to be truly special and I was not disappointed! The characters added color and flavor to the story. Unique in their own way. Loved how witty most of them were. The playful banter put a smile on my face. Can we befriend fictional characters? That’s truly how I felt with some of them. With the magical word weaving from Miss Hornburg, I was able to easily imagine the sounds and sights of another world. I loved the connection between Alvis and Myra. A slow burn kind of dance. That ending has me wanting more! I need book three ASAP!

This is a series I highly recommend and has fast become a favorite of mine. Enjoy retellings with a twist? These books are for you. Take a chance. You won’t be disappointed! I give this 5 stars.

The Wolf of the Woods: A Little Red Riding Hood Retelling (Forbidden Fables Book 1) by Savvy Rose – My Review

Title: The Wolf of the Woods: A Little Red Riding Hood Retelling (Forbidden Fables Book 1)

Author: Savvy Rose

Release Date: February 15th 2022

Genre: Fairytale Retelling

Lux
My father handed my mother to the men who burned her on a pyre.
I was left with my Gran, tucked away inside a cabin in the Welsh woods.
My mother’s books were all I had left of the brave woman I once idolized.
Soon, the woods began to call to me, the dark depths seeming more inviting than my own reality.
It wasn’t until I awakened that I realized just what my curiosity had done.
Before me stood not a beast, but a man. A man so fierce, that I would willingly forsake my God, just to worship him.

Fenrir
Exiled, for murder. All because of the beast inside me. Blood, war, and women roused him; the full moon stilled him.
I did not hunt these woods for women; but the men in the black coats do. I pay no mind to them because they leave offerings at my doorstep. I am no God, but I enjoyed being revered.
My thoughts never strayed from day-to-day tasks, until the day I saw the fox-haired girl.
She was to be mine, and I would shed as much blood as Odin would allow to make that so.

Oh Miss Savvy Rose! You know the way to my little black heart.

This book had everything I desire in a dark romance read. Wickedly delightful woman, check. Hot alpha man, check. The heat between the two is off the charts. Once I was done, I was craving for more.

The growth in which this author’s writing has grown, is amazing and impressive. This is author not to sleep on! She has a way with words and this book is one you don’t want to miss. Especially if you love dark romance like I do! I give it 5 stars.

Author Spotlight · Interview with an Author

Interview with an Author featuring Leslie O’Sullivan

Scroll to the bottom for a special surprise!

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Leslie O’Sullivan! Her debut book, Pink Guitars and Falling Stars (Rockin’ Fairy Tales Book 1) released January 6th 2022.

What inspired you to start writing?

I adore stories. I’ve been a bookworm my whole life as well as a huge movie fan. Imagining myself in the stories I loved set me on a course to create my own characters and journeys.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I am a Post-it notes hoarder. Color-coding the scenes, beats, turning points, etc. for each book is my happy place. I create a new color palette for every new story. Full disclosure, I’m also a journal collector, and yes, they are color coordinated to match each individual Post-it palette.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I wrote and queried four YA novels which were fantastic learning experiences, before switching to adult romance. PINK GUITARS AND FALLING STARS, my Rapunzel/Romeo and Juliet mashup, started out as a YA novel and then “matured” into an adult romance. I have a soft spot in my heart for PINK GUITARS AND FALLING STARS since it is my debut novel. As of now, I’ve written four adult romances with four more in the works, all of which will be published by the awesomeness that is City Owl Press.

How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing?

World building is one of my favorite aspects of storytelling. I come from a theatrical design background and use the same design process as I would to create scenery or a lighting design for stage when I craft my worlds. Tapping into subtext and character motivations are a large part of my process when creating an environment and its moving parts. The emotional response of color and texture are an integral part of my world building as well. I will sketch images, locations, and create mood boards to find the right tone and synergy for the story I am telling. I even draft floor plans if I want to dig specifically into the lay of the land. If it’s a fantasy or sci-fi world, I work to embed connections to the now, so readers can build relationships with the new reality I present in my stories.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

I am a debut author, so I’ve just begun forming relationships with readers. I’ve had a blast meeting people at virtual launch parties for other authors and through contests. It’s been a thrill to see sweet reviews pop up from folks I’ve never met. I’d love to hang out with some book clubs and chat. I’m really looking forward to this being the beginning of lots of future interactions with readers.

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Fairy tales and myths have always been at the top of my list for inspiration. I’m a happily ever after kind of gal which makes writing and reading romance such a joy. The Lord of the Rings is my favorite saga of all time – Aragorn and Arwen SWOON. I’m a huge fangirl of the Outlander series as well – Jamie and Claire DOUBLE SWOON. My theater background sparked my love of Shakespeare.

When writing a series how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and also yourself?

I love the challenge of peeking into every corner of a fictional world to see what gold nuggets are waiting for me to discover. Any character in a novel’s world has their own story to tell that can lead to delicious surprises. Writing romance is always a fresh hug to me. I indulge my hopelessly romantic side, exploring the many different ways, likely and unlikely of people falling in love.

Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with me?

The next book in the “Rockin’ Fairy Tales,” series out this summer is GILDED BUTTERFLY, a King Midas and the Golden Touch/King Lear mashup, centered around a reality television show, starring a musical trio of Hollywood influencer sisters who happen to be witches. The first book in my “Behind the Scenes” series, HOT SET, will release in the fall. It’s the story of a fashion catalog copy writer who lands an assistant’s job on the writing staff of a television drama based on a wildly popular series of period romance novels and happens to catch the amorous attention of the show’s super heart-throbby star.

What advice would you give to other authors?

This one is easy peasy. NEVER give up. The writing journey as well as any creative endeavor requires a thick skin and patience. Surround yourself with friends and co-authors who can relate to your path, support you, and share in your successes. Never lose sight of joy in the writing itself.

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

At the root of all my stories is a fairy tale vibe, whether it’s an actual fairy tale retelling, or a real-life fairy tale flavored journey. It’s an honor and a dream come true to have my stories out in the world. I so appreciate readers, reviewers, and the new friends I’m making on social media. Thank you all so much. Let’s keep this party going! Huge hugs to The Literary Vixen for this opportunity to chat for a spell.

Leslie O’Sullivan is the author of Rockin’ Fairy Tales, an adult romance series of Shakespeare/fairy tale mash ups set against the backdrop of Hollywood’s music scene. The first book in the series, PINK GUITARS AND FALLING STARS, a Rapunzel/Romeo & Juliet story is available now from the Mystic Owl imprint of City Owl Books. Coming this fall is her Behind the Scenes contemporary romance series that peeks into the off-camera secrets of a wildly popular television drama. She’s a UCLA Bruin with a BA and MFA from their Department of Theater where she also taught for years on the design faculty. Her tenure in the world of television was as the assistant art director on “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show.” Leslie is a California girl who loves to indulge her fangirl side at cons.

Interview with an Author featuring Alice Ivinya

The Literary Vixen presents…

Joining us today is Alice Ivinya! Her newest release, Feathers of Blood (Kingdom of Birds and Beasts Book 2) released on October 6th 2021.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hello! I live in Bristol, UK with my husband, toddler and the best dog in the world, Summer.

I work as a small animal vet three days a week for a charity treating the pets of those who would otherwise be unable to afford medical care for their pets. The rest of the time I look after my toddler, or write books when he’s asleep! I also love reading and walking my dog.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I have written stories for as long as I can remember. The first books were about a group of kids who ran away and became rulers of all the sharks in the sea. Worryingly they all got married at the age of 12-14 but that was old to my 8 year old self! I wrote my first full length novel at 11. It was about a magician’s apprentice who was bad at magic. Throughout my teenage years I wrote epic fantasy after epic fantasy that my poor parents had to read, even when they went over 200,000 words! As a child I was badly dyslexic and struggled with sentence structure and spelling to the extent that many of my early stories were illegible until I typed them up. It took me much longer than all the other children in my class to both write and type, but I just loved to tell stories and have never been able to stop telling them. Slowly I developed techniques to get around my dyslexia and now it never holds me back. I now have eleven published full length books and seven short stories.

What time of the day do you usually write?

Until six months ago, I would write in my son’s midday nap, but just after he hit two, he stopped sleeping in the day unless it was a quick nap in the car! Now I write in the evenings. This was easier in lock down, as now the world is opening up again, I feel there is a lot competing for my time! I now have Wednesday morning child-free where I try and get a good 2-4k words down!

How much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing?

It depends on the book. Normally I know what I want the world to ‘feel’ like and everything stems from there, rather than knowing the ins and outs. Often as the characters discover the world for themselves, I’m also discovering it!

Which of your books were the most enjoyable to write?

Hands down Feathers of Snow and Feathers of Blood. SO MUCH FUN! I’m so excited to write the last book in the trilogy!

I also have a book coming called The Widow and the Beast, which is like my pick me up project when I need a break from my bigger books. It is set in the land of faery and is so much fun, it always gets me back into the mood.

What book is currently by your bedside table?

The Fair Queen by Lyndsey Hall, which is excellent.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

I do, and I have made some amazing friends! I am especially honoured and excited when they make fan art! Mostly they want me to write faster haha!

Favorite book when you were a kid.

Spellfall by Katherine Roberts until about the age of 12 when I became obsessed with Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time and then Brandon Sanderson.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Hufflepuff, Divergent, Family.

What advice would you give to other authors?

Keep writing! Every book published is a game changer!

What is the one thing you want people to know about you and your books?

I really hope my books strengthen people to overcome whatever challenges they face. Plus animals. There will always be animals!

Thank you Alice Ivinya for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out her series, Kingdom of Birds and Beasts today!

Alice lives in Bristol, UK, and has loved fantasy all her life. Her favourite author is Brandon Sanderson. Author Spotlight · New Release

Catching up with D.C. Gambel

Catching up with D.C Gambel! Her latest story, Huntress and The Thorn Court in the Once Upon Another World: A Twisted Fairy Tale Box Set went live today.

Congrats on your newest release!

Tell us more about your story in this collection

My story is an urban fantasy twist on beauty and the beast. My MC Isabel is a hunter, who basically polices the preternatural community. Gideon is the alpha werewolf of the local pack who takes Isabel as his prisoner after she mistakenly kills a member of his pack. There’s more but I don’t want to give too much away.

What did you enjoy most about writing it?

The sex lol no I enjoyed the twists and turns the story took that I didn’t even see coming.

What did you hate most?

That nothing came out like I expected. I had scenes already mapped out but NONE, not a single one, made it into the story. Some were written and then cut, which upset me so much to do because when I first thought up the idea, those scenes were what drove me to want to write it.

What can readers expect from this set?

Romance with a happily ever after or a happy for now as some stories, including yours truly’s, may have a sequel. (Coughing whispers) Huntress and the Splintered Court.

Last time we chatted, you said you were writing a story under a new pen name. How is the story coming along?

It’s coming. I get hung up so I put it away and work on Black Phoenix because I really need to finish that one. Right now they’re both on hold for a few weeks while I finish up a Christmas short story, Mistletoe and Demons, that will take place in The Edge of Forever universe after the conclusion of book four, The Prophecy. I don’t have more info to share on the Christmas short. Maybe next time.

What’s next for you?

Immediately is finishing my Christmas short and preparing the release of Huntress and the Splintered Court. Afterwards, I have so many ideas plaguing my mind, another twisted fairytale and a new series both are in the works.

Thank you D.C. Gambel for chatting with me! I will include her information down below. Check out her newest release, Once Upon Another World: A Twisted Fairy Tale Box Set today!

~Synopsis~

Not all fairy tales are as they appear.

Was it actually Red who hunted the wolf? What if the prince was the one in distress? Did the straw really get spun into gold? How well did those glass slippers truly fit?

Where princesses do their own rescuing, princes aren’t who they first appear to be, and beasts are friends, not foe—and maybe something more…

With stories spanning from true love’s kiss to reverse harem, skyscrapers to ancient castles, sweet romance to steamy nights, these alluring tales will satisfy readers of fantasy and romance alike.

Grab your copy of ONCE UPON ANOTHER WORLD and discover 22 twisted fairy tales with a happily ever after unlike anything you’ve ever read before.

Authors included in the box set are: Monique Singleton, Joel Crofoot, Zack Hacker, D.E. Chapman, Erin McFadden & K.L. Bone, Jaclyn Roche, L.R.W. Lee, JB Trepagnier, Silvana G. Sanchez, Cassidy K. O’Connor, Jude Cocaigne, M.L. Garza, Hunter S. Jones, Aldrea Alien, Amari Ara Dreamer, D.C. Gambel, Krista Ames, K.A. Fox, Christa Ann, Iris Sweetwater & Chandra Trulove Fry, and Lianne Willowmoon & Phillip Shadowdragon

~Synopsis~

What happens at the Thorn Court stays at the Thorn Court

Isabel is not your average princess. All she wants to do is keep peace among the preternatural community, but when she mistakenly kills an innocent werewolf, the cost of peace may be a steeper price than she’s willing to pay.

Gideon is a beast of a man. As the pack alpha he has to be. When an opportunity  practically lands in his lap, he’s driven to seize it, even if it means taking Isabel, a princess of The Order, as his prisoner.

When attraction blooms, Isabel has no choice but to resist the sexy alpha. If she doesn’t, her very future at the order could be in jeopardy

D.C. Gambel is a mother, army wife, and a hopeless romantic. Romance has always been her genre of choice whether it’s contemporary, historical, paranormal, or even pushing towards erotica in both reading and writing. When she first decided to try her hand at writing, romance was the obvious choice. Getting lost in a different world, living unimaginable lives is something she strives for even if it’s just a temporary enjoyment.
